What do you conjure up in your mind when you hear the term, "MindMeld?" On Star Trek it was the joining of two minds. In the context of entrepreneurship, all kinds of positive associations can be made: Collaboration, certainly, but something deeper, more intense.

A group of creative minds coming together for a purpose?

A resource for people who create, who think?

A way to connect thinking people?

All of those things are at the heart of this proposal.


Overview of MindMeld.com

The objective is to discover a way to utilize Internet technology to perpetuate innovation in a profitable way.

The concept is to stimulate innovation through collaboration by providing a unique resource - a value-added conduit carrying communication - between inventors and industry to take a concept and mold it into something that has value, or to enhance an existing product or service.

MindMeld is the name used in this document to refer to the set of processes by which the objective is met.

The MindMeld Concepts Answer a Need

"An innovation is a complex series of activities . . . where the original idea is conceived, proceeding through a succession of interwoven steps of research, development, and management decision-making . . . culminating when a product, which might be a thing, a technique, or a process, is accepted in the marketplace." (Gerald Udell, Ph.D., "Exploring the Innovation Process")

The barriers to small business and independent inventors in bringing an innovation or idea to industry are many:

  • Independent inventors are constrained by their own limitations. Beyond the invention itself, they must be competent in many other areas to be successful: patent law, manufacturing, engineering techniques, marketing, etc.

  • The high cost of innovation or product development is beyond the means of most individuals and many small businesses, as is the financial ability to protect the product or idea from infringement.

  • Industry itself can be wary of independent inventors because they represent a possible legal hazard or public relations headache.

  • The independents are themselves reluctant to show their ideas because of concern about theft. Corporate inventions disclosure documents tend to be one-sided, providing little protection for the inventor.

  • So-called "idea promoters" providing services to inventors are frequently inefficient, ineffective, or outright fraudulent.

Even within corporations, who tend to pursue an orderly, internal program of product development, the environment can be contrary to innovation: innovators seldom get the credit and almost never escape the criticism.

Because of the challenges facing innovators - both individuals and corporations - the objective of MindMeld is to provide a systematic approach to enhance and perpetuate innovation by improving the process of innovation itself. This will be accomplished in part by utilizing the Internet to network participants for the purpose of collaboration.
