 Overview

We created the WholesaleMeats.com Web site in June 1997 to measure traffic and collect survey data from consumers and businesses interested in buying/selling online. Our online survey results prove that many consumers and businesses are eager to buy meat products online. The strategy is to purchase product and/or partner with a packer(s) willing to drop-ship product to consumers and restaurants.

Trends

According to the experts the online services that will do the best will "disintermediate" or "re-intermediate" the sales process. In English, that means cutting out the middlemen or substituting a more efficient one.

According to Forrester Research Inc., business on the Internet reached $43 billion in 1998, and is expected to grow to $109 billion by the end of this year and a whopping $1.3 trillion by 2003.

Online sales of grocery products are projected to grow from $63 million in 1997, to $3.5 billion by 2002. The success of online marketers like Omaha Steaks have proven that consumers are not only willing to purchase meat products online they are willing to pay very high prices. For example, they charge $59 plus $9.99 S&H for 4 (10oz) KC strips. And their 7lb spiral sliced hams cost $54 plus S&H.

Strategy

The strategy is to target both the wholesale and the retail markets by building two Web sites, WholesaleMeats.com as a wholesale outlet and HellaciousHams.com as a retail outlet for high quality hams and steaks. The Hellacious brand can be used as Hellacious Hams or Hellacious Steaks, etc. The Web sites will be essentially the same except they will have individually branded product enabling us to capture both the wholesale and retail markets.

We desire to partner with a company that will dedicate the marketing resources necessary to establish Wholesale Meats, HellaciousÔ Hams as online brands. An obvious partner would be a Some of the advantages to the packer are:

  • Access to a new direct marketing channel
  • Access to national and international markets
  • Access to both wholesale and retail market segments
  • Ability to generate new sales at much higher profit margins
  • Enhanced cash flow--payment is via credit card and real-time
  • Ability to get real-time feedback from consumers
  • Ability to use the real-time nature of the medium to move dated product

Why partner with us?

  • By selling product via these Web sites and brands you wouldn't have to disrupt relationships with your existing marketing channels because these entities could be positioned as customers.
  • We have been collecting survey data from consumers since 1993 and understand this business model as well as anyone.
  • We have extensive knowledge of e-commerce software development and will leverage the software used to create FactoryDirect.com to minimize costs and time to market.
  • The generic name "Wholesale Meats" defines the category. It would cost millions to create another online brand that defines the purpose of the Web site and is universally understood.
  • Hellacious Hams should do well in the retail and gift categories.
  • We have reasonable expectations. Our goal is to retain a small equity stake and help implement the project.

Conclusion

We have been waiting for the appropriate time to exploit this opportunity and believe that now is the time due to these combined factors:

  • Retailers' unwillingness to discount their products. (Major retailers aren't likely to be successful in this category because they are constrained by their existing brick and mortar infrastructures.)
  • Success of Internet marketers in 1998 and the projected exponential growth
  • Internet technology has advanced to the point that development costs are reduced, compared to even 18 months ago, while functionality and reliability have increased.
